Resource Efficiency in Organisations

Sectoral Information

Based on information gathered in 2009 in the EPA Waste Characterisation Study, the following graph summarises the main waste producing sectors in Ireland.

Some sectors are very good at recovery (e.g. other retail which includes drapery and generates mainly cardboard, plastic film and hangers) while other sectors have unexpectedly large volumes of mixed waste (e.g. offices, because there are so many and often include associated canteens).

Tip!
Click on the relevant bar of the sector in the chart and you will get detailed information on that individual sector including a Sectoral Factor.

Because canteens and offices often form part of larger businesses they have been examined in detail during national studies. Both have very consistent waste profiles and opportunities for improvement. They are therefore a good initial area to focus on for prevention initiatives.

Tip!
Caution: please note that waste profiles and individual sector factors used here are based on a series of detailed sectoral waste assessments that were scaled up nationally using the best available data. They are only a guide and once new reporting systems become established these values will become more statistically dependable.
