Resource Efficiency in Organisations

Sector: Office

In offices the main waste is obviously paper with the quantities of other wastes being dependent on the individual business. The level of recovery of waste in offices varies depending on the waste management systems in place, with offices using centralised bin systems and paper-only bins at individual desks being the best performers.

Waste profiles from local authority offices (purple), independent offices and internal offices from large businesses

Of the other wastes Cardboard, plastics, glass and metal are all potentially recyclable. Often good segregation is the first step to prevention and good segregation requires good bin placement and good signage.

The Scale-up Factor for Offices is: 0.035 tonnes per year excluding canteen waste,
e.g. office of 25 employees,
0.035*25= 0.875 tonnes.
If there is a canteen then add canteen factor
