Resource Efficiency in Organisations

Food Waste Regulations

The Waste Management (Food Waste) Regulations 2009 govern businesses that sell or serve food. According to these regulations:

  • Food waste from specified premises must be segregated at source from 1st July 2010
  • For any premises producing less than 50 kg per week, there was a one-year derogation available, but the regulations now apply across the board

The following businesses are affected by these regulations:

  • Hotels
  • Restaurants
  • Caf├ęs
  • Public Houses
  • Guest Houses
  • Shops
  • Supermarkets
  • Chippers (sale of hot food off the premises)
  • Hospitals
  • Nursing Homes
  • All workplaces where food is supplied to employees for consumption
  • Licensed events-community type events excluded

These regulations mean that many companies are now keen to engage in resource efficiency with regard to their food waste. Why not work with them?
